Concealed Handgun Classes
The information on this page will assist you in understanding more about the CHL classes we offer. If you find that you have more questions after reading this info, check out our Frequently Asked Questions page, or drop us a line.
One of the benefits to taking our classes is found in our flexibility. We are committed to helping you become a licensed concealed handgun carrier, and we will do whatever we can to help you reach that goal. Our classes are offered on Sundays to make attendance easy, and we can also set up special class times for only a slightly larger fee. If you are not trained in handling a handgun, we would be happy to give you personal handgun classes to make sure you are prepared to pass the CHL class.
Fees
Every CHL class will require that you bring some items. One thing that sets us apart from other classes in the Houston area is our commitment to giving you the most for your money.
The class fee for New CHL Applicants is $115. The fee for Renewals is $75. This includes:
- Range fees
- Notary signature
- Passport photos
What to Bring
There are a few things that you will need to bring with you. Some of these items are available for rental or purchase at the range.
- Gun
- Minimum caliber is 9mm (for automatic) or .38 (for revolver).
- Guns are available for rental, but you must reserve one in advance with the range (see our contact page).
- Two (2) boxes of ammunition
- Ammo is available for purchase at the range, but call them to ensure that they have your caliber and to reserve your box.
- Ear protection (earplugs or ear muffs) — Print out a coupon for free earplugs!
- Eye protection (safety glasses)
- A cap or hat of some kind is required.
- Please download the Texas Concealed Handgun Laws and Selected Statutes (PDF) and read it before your class.
License Application
After the class (or before, if you like) you will need to submit your paperwork to the State to officially apply for your license.
- To expedite your license application process, please visit the DPS website and apply for your license online. If you do this before the class, then you can bring the forms with you for Shane to verify; however, that is not required. You can also download the application forms, print them, fill them out, and bring them with you to the class if you would prefer to submit them manually.
- You must schedule your fingerprinting with L1 Identity Solutions, the state approved vendor of fingerprinting for CHL Licensees. Please see the DPS website's Fingerprints and Photos information page, for more information.
Times and General Info
Our classes start at 8:00 am on Sunday mornings, and both new and renewal applicants are taught in the same class. In accordance with state law, each class lasts a total of ten hours. Renewal applicants are only required to attend the last five hours of the class and should show up at 1:00 pm. We usually finish up around 6:00 pm. The size of our classes vary depending on interest, but they are always small enough to provide you with an interactive, personal experience.
Each class includes about 1 to 1½ hours of shooting time, including a shooting proficiency test. Most of the class time is spent in an interactive classroom setting.
Passing the Concealed Handgun class requires 70% or better on the written and range exams. If you know how to shoot and pay attention in class, passing will not be a problem.
